THE NEW 2019 CHEVY SONIC GOES TURBO ON ALL TRIMS
Of all the many models that Chevrolet has rolled out in the last decade, the Sonic tends to get overlooked. The sub-compact Chevrolet Sonic is an ultra fuel efficient, practical and fun addition to the Chevy lineup. For the the upcoming 2019 model year Chevrolet has decided to make some major upgrades to the Sonic. At Rudolph Chevrolet of El Paso Texas, we can’t wait for the latest Sonic to hit our lot for a number of reasons. Here’s what you can expect from the 2019 Chevy Sonic when it arrives.
Engines, Transmissions and Drivetrains
The biggest change that the 2019 Sonic brings to the table is the adoption of a 1.4-liter turbo as the standard engine. Capable of producing 138 hp and 148 lb-ft of torque, the Sonic’s powerplant makes for a surprisingly exhilarating driving experience. A six-speed automatic transmission comes standard on all trim levels. A slick six-speed manual gearbox is also available as an option. As you might expect, Chevrolet’s garden variety front-wheel-drive transaxle is the only drivetrain option available to 2019 Sonic buyers.
Performance on the Road
Thanks to a lean curb weight of 2,837 pounds, a 2019 Sonic equipped with a six-speed manual can hit 60 mph in 8.4 seconds. With a wheelbase of 99.4 inches, the Sonic boasts a 34.5-foot turning circle that allows it to maneuver into tight spaces. Braking is fairly impressive due to four-wheel ABS despite the use of drums on the rear rims. Fuel consumption clocks in at 28 mpg around town and 37 mpg on the highway for a combined economy of 32 mpg.
Exterior and Interior Styling
From the outside, the 2019 Sonic looks much like the preceding 2018 version. The only major changes are the replacement of the Ivy Metallic and Arctic Blue Metallic paint colors with a new hue called Shock. While 15-inch aluminum rims come standard, 17-inch wheels are available. Interior passenger volume remains unchanged at 90.3 cubic feet. Standard cloth upholstery and black plastic interior trim can be augmented with a leatherette steering wheel. As per usual, the Sonic comes in both sedan and hatchback layouts.
Much like previous versions of the Sonic, the 2019 variant features Chevy’s StabiliTrak ESC for superior handling in challenging conditions. The 2019 Sonic also comes with Hill Start Assist by default. Every Sonic features 10 airbags for impeccable passenger protection during collisions. Safety upgrades include popular driver-assistance features like forward-collision alerts, parking assist and lane-departure warnings. If you want all of the bells and whistles, the Driver Confidence package tacks on a ton of technology and functionality for less than $500.
Every new Sonic features SiriusXM Satellite Radio and OnStar compatibility by default. What’s more, 4G LTE networking is included at no additional cost. A gorgeous 7.0-inch touchscreen that controls Chevy’s famous MyLink infotainment system is available. The Sonic also supports Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Buyers of the 2019 Sonic can expect to see the same digital Driver Information Center on the dash that’s found on the 2018 model. A pair of USB 3.0 ports and an auxiliary input jack round out the Sonic’s connectivity offerings.
Packages, Trims and Release Dates
For 2019, the Sonic will no longer be offering a Fun and Sun package featuring 17-inch aluminum alloys and a sunroof. Furthermore, the key-less entry system and remote vehicle start will not be standard features of the LT trim level. However, those options will be available in the Convenience package. Other than those minor alterations, the LS, LT and Premium trims will be largely unchanged. While no firm release date has been announced, the Sonic should arrive in September.
